When George Washington met Rochambeau in Hartford, 1780
The start of the partnership that won the Revolutionary War
My latest YouTube video is more serious historical documentary style than usual. It’s about the first time George Washington and the Comte de Rochambeau met during the War of American Independance, which was at Hartford in September 1780. As background, the video explains the situation that George Washington faced in the Revolutionary War by 1780, when the French government finally sent a land force under Rochambeau to reinforce him. It explains the skill and tact with which the diplomatic Rochambeau dealt with both Washington and Lafayette. They were anxious to attack New York City and Rochambeau had to convince them that he did not have the resources yet to act. Their patience was rewarded the following year when the allies achieved a victory at Yorktown. The video describes Rochambeau's journey to and from Hartford and his encounter with a patriotic local. It also describes what Hartford landmarks survive from the time Washington and Rochambeau and their parties were there in 1780. Please check it out!
